We do not support synthetic material or mass production, but like to work with local craftsmen of gemstone cutters, silver and goldsmiths to spread the economic benefits for a wider population. Design of Gems was founded by Karoliina as a result of working in Yangon for over three years and falling in love with the beautiful natural gemstones found there. She consequently decided to change the direction of her career and completed a Diploma course for Fine Jewellery Design at Jewellery Design and Management School in Singapore. While Karoliina is originally from Finland, she has lived a long time in Asia and Singapore is where her home is. Her favourite design period is Art Deco, while on her own designs she likes to mix Nordic minimalism and Asian vibrant colors, including classic, ethnic and animal themes at times. She is amazed with the craftsmanship and skills still existing in Myanmar and in order for these to exist in 10 years time, Karoliina has created a MyDesign collection of exclusive pieces handcrafted locally in Myanmar. By creating consumer demand the skills might just survive in a world of AI and mass production.
